WebApr 22, 2013 · On the north bank of the River Tyne, the Wylam Wooden Waggonway opened in 1748. It later had iron rails used by Hedley's early steam locomotives before closing in 1867. It ran from Wylam Colliery to staiths at Lemington. Most of its route was used by the Scotswood, Newburn and Wylam Railway in 1875. WebOct 28, 2024 · On August 12, 1753, Thomas Bewick was born at Cherryburn House in the Village of Mickley, in the parish of Ovingham, Northumberland, England. His father rented a small colliery at Mickley Bank, and sent his son to school in the nearby village. Although Bewick was a poor student, he showed an affinity and talent for drawing at a very early age.
