I have always had mine attached to one leg of the landing gear on my P3S but there dosnt seem to be a good way to attach it to my MP keeping it away from the sensors on the bottom. The Mavic is not as top heavy as the phantom. there is a few system out there for the phantom but also Youtube video's of them failing. but yes you need the clearance to keep it dry and then yes the more clearance the more it becomes top heavy.
